The "Just In Case" List of Safety Tips for the First Date
When most of us think of a first date, we think of being nervous, having fun, and
whether or not we will get a good-night kiss. However, with online dating, you need
to think of safety as well. More often than not, a first date will go smoothly,
but just in case, here are a few ways to stay safe while meeting your potential
soul-mate.
- Always meet in a public place – and stay there for the entire date. Don’t be tempted
to change locations half-way through the date (like dinner here and drinks there).
By staying in the same location, you are less likely to encounter secluded areas.
- Tell someone else about your date. Let your friend or sibling know where you are
going, who the other person is, and what the plans are.
- Bring your cell phone and make sure it’s fully charged. This can be a lifesaver
in emergencies.
- Don’t let them pick you up or drop you off – you might not want them knowing where
you live. (And don’t let them follow you either. Go to a store or other public place
before going home.)
- If you are really worried, bring a friend along to double date for the first date.
- Talk on the phone first, before meeting in person. While this won’t prevent anything
from happening, it can help you get to know the person better before meeting them.
(Note: Give your friend the their phone number before the date, just in case.)
- Don’t drink alcohol (or don’t drink much) and never let your drink or food out of
your sight.
- Arrive before your date does, that way you can check them out first (and they won’t
see which car you drove).
- Have a friend sit at another table within eye-shot to keep an eye on you during
the date. Your date will never even need to know that they are there.
- Listen to your gut instinct – if it doesn’t feel right, then trust your instinct.
